πŸ“Project Overview

Project Overview

DSV Solutions, one of the world's fastest-growing third-party logistics providers, has commissioned KNAPP to implement an advanced omnichannel fulfilment solution at their new distribution center in Venlo, Netherlands. This 60,000 square meter facility represents a strategic move to centralize European supply chain operations for DSV's customers, consolidating from multiple distribution centers into one centralized warehouse.

The distribution center primarily serves customers in the textile and sports sectors, addressing the increasing demand for both e-commerce and B2B business. The facility is designed to handle substantial volumes for the coming years, supporting DSV's growth trajectory while meeting customer expectations for rapid order fulfillment throughout Europe.

The project enables next-day delivery capability across Europe, processing overnight orders for shipment the following day with early morning deliveries to end customers.

Technical Solution

OSR Shuttle Evo System

The heart of the automation solution is KNAPP's OSR Shuttle Evo system, featuring a massive capacity of 240,000 totes. This shuttle-based storage and retrieval system was selected for its exceptional flexibility and ability to handle high volumes and extensive SKU counts typical in the textile and sports sectors. The system manages inventory for the entire operation across three compartmentalized sections.

Key Features

The OSR Shuttle Evo system provides exceptional flexibility to handle the high volume requirements and extensive SKU variety in textile and sports sectors. The 240,000-tote capacity supports substantial inventory management needs.

The twelve Pick-it-Easy stations deliver both high throughput (10,000+ picks/hour) and excellent ergonomics for operators. The sequential picking capability for six orders provides operational flexibility for diverse order profiles.

Fully automated outbound processing with automatic box height adjustment optimizes shipping efficiency and reduces environmental impact by minimizing wasted space in shipments.

Results & Benefits

The facility achieves remarkable throughput of over 10,000 picks per hour, enabling rapid order processing for next-day delivery throughout Europe. This high-speed operation supports DSV's commitment to customer satisfaction.

The centralized European supply chain model consolidates multiple distribution centers into one efficient operation, streamlining logistics and reducing complexity for DSV's customers in the textile and sports sectors.

Automated packaging optimization reduces shipping costs and environmental impact by eliminating empty space in shipments, addressing both economic and sustainability objectives.

Challenges & Solutions

The primary challenge involved centralizing multiple distribution centers across Europe into a single hub while maintaining service levels. The KNAPP OSR Shuttle Evo solution provided the necessary volume capacity and flexibility to support this consolidation.

Managing the high number of SKUs typical in textile and sports sectors required a system with extensive storage capacity and efficient retrieval capabilities. The 240,000-tote OSR Shuttle system delivered the required inventory management capabilities.

System Integrator

KNAPP served as the system integrator for this comprehensive omnichannel fulfilment solution. Their expertise in automated storage and retrieval systems, combined with their Pick-it-Easy workstation technology, enabled DSV to create a state-of-the-art distribution center capable of meeting the demanding requirements of modern logistics in the textile and sports sectors.
